Large Crowd Prompts Venue Change for Jones County Ag Valuation Meeting; Second Meeting Scheduled Monday

June 17, 2026

Interest in proposed changes to agricultural property valuations in Jones County was evident Wednesday afternoon as approximately 300 landowners and community members attended a town hall meeting hosted by the Jones County Appraisal District.

The meeting was originally scheduled to be held in the Jones County Sheriff's Office training room, but due to the overwhelming turnout, it was moved to the Anson High School Auditorium to accommodate the crowd.

The town hall was called to discuss the proposed 2026 agricultural productivity values, which are used to determine agricultural special valuations for qualifying landowners.

According to documents provided by the appraisal district, the proposed agricultural values are:

  • Native Pasture: $19.00 per acre

  • Wildlife Management: $19.00 per acre

  • Improved Pasture: $97.87 per acre

  • Dry Crop Land: $173.95 per acre

  • Irrigated Crop Land: $347.17 per acre

The calculations are based on a five-year average using data from 2020 through 2024, including lease income, production data, operating expenses and other agricultural economic factors. The appraisal district's consultant noted the values are developed using the methodology prescribed by the Texas Property Tax Code and the Texas Comptroller's Agricultural Appraisal Manual.

Due to the significant public interest, appraisal district officials have scheduled a second public meeting for landowners who were unable to attend Wednesday's session or who wish to learn more about the proposed values.
