Army Major Carries American Flag 15.5 Miles from Anson to Stamford

July 06, 2026

As the sun rose over Jones County Saturday morning, U.S. Army Major Shawn Bottoms set out on a mission of patriotism and perseverance, carrying the American flag 15.5 miles from Anson to the Texas Cowboy Reunion grounds in Stamford.
Bottoms, the son-in-law of Jones County Sheriff Danny Jimenez, and his wife Linda, completed the run in honor of the nation's Independence Day celebration and the men and women who have served in the United States Armed Forces.
Carrying the American flag for the entire journey, Bottoms made the trek from Anson to Stamford despite the summer heat, arriving at the Texas Cowboy Reunion grounds ahead of the day's rodeo festivities. His run symbolized dedication not only to his country, but also to the values of service, sacrifice and patriotism represented by the Stars and Stripes.
The Texas Cowboy Reunion has long celebrated Western heritage, military service and American tradition, making the flag run a fitting addition to one of Texas' most historic Independence Day celebrations.
Friends, family and community members gathered at the rodeo grounds to welcome Bottoms as he completed the final stretch of the 15.5-mile route, applauding his effort and commitment.
A career Army officer, Bottoms' run served as a visible reminder of the sacrifices made by members of the military and their families, while honoring the freedoms celebrated each Independence Day.
The Texas Cowboy Reunion continues throughout the holiday weekend with rodeo performances, parades and community events celebrating both America's independence and the rich traditions of the American West.
